Dear Families
Celebrating Catholic Education Week
This week, we, together as a school community, celebrate Catholic Education Week. A time to Honour the Past, Embrace the Present, and Shape the Future of Catholic Education in Tasmania
Catholic Education Week is an annual event and a special opportunity to reflect on and celebrate the enduring mission, values, and achievements of Catholic education in Tasmania. With a legacy spanning nearly 200 years, Catholic schools continue to faithfully serve Tasmanian families, grounded in a tradition that nurtures both academic excellence and spiritual growth.
Tasmania alone has 38 Catholic schools that continue to bring this mission to life—educating minds, shaping hearts, and forming young people to live lives of faith, purpose, and service. In strong partnership with families, governments, and Church communities, Catholic schools remain committed to the holistic development of every student and to building a brighter future for all Tasmanians.
This year, we as a system celebrate Catholic Education Week under the theme "Pilgrims of Hope," echoing the late Pope Francis' call for the upcoming 2025 Year of Jubilee—a sacred time of prayer, reconciliation, and renewal. This theme invites us to journey together in faith, guided by the hope we find in Christ. As Pope Francis reminded us, “Through our witness, may hope spread to all those who anxiously seek it.”
As a school community, we can embody the spirit of Pilgrims of Hope by:
- Creating spaces of welcome and compassion, where students, staff and families feel seen, valued, and included.
- Engaging in acts of service, reaching out to those in need both within and beyond our school.
- Fostering prayer, reflection, and gratitude, deepening our faith and drawing closer to God.
- Encouraging resilience and optimism, reminding one another that hope endures, even in times of challenge.
- Celebrating our shared journey, recognising the goodness, diversity, and potential in others and within our community.
May this week be a joyful reminder of the light Catholic education and our school community bring to our lives, and a moment to renew our shared commitment to a future built on faith, learning, and hope.
Yours in partnership,
Charlene Best

Man of the Shroud Exhibition
On Monday 28th July, the Junior Joeys visited the Man of the Shroud Exhibition. This exhibition explored a replica of the Shroud of Turin, a cloth believed by many to have wrapped the body of Jesus after His crucifixion.
The students learned about what science, scripture, and history tell us about the shroud. They looked at evidence and different points of view to better understand its story and significance.
It was a great opportunity for the Junior Joeys to reflect on their faith, ask thoughtful questions, and explore how faith and science can work together.
Visit from Sister Carmel
This week, we were lucky to have Sr Carmel, a Sister of St Joseph, visit our school. She spoke to our staff and students about the inspiring lives of Mary MacKillop and Julian Tenison Woods, the founders of the Sisters of St Joseph.
With Mary MacKillop's Feast Day tomorrow, Sr Carmel helped us learn more about how Mary and Julian lived out the Josephite values we follow at SHU: Compassion, Inclusion, Sustainability, Honesty, and Gratefulness.
Our Junior Joeys also had a special session with Sr Carmel. Together, they talked about ways they can show these values in their daily lives—both at school and in the wider community.

2025 NAPLAN Results
In our 2025 NAPLAN results, our school demonstrated strong and consistent performance across key areas of literacy and numeracy, reflecting the impact of targeted teaching strategies and student engagement. In Year 3, students achieved particularly strong results in Spelling and Grammar and Punctuation, indicating a solid foundation in language skills, including word knowledge and sentence structure. Numeracy results also showed strength, suggesting that students are developing confidence and competence in mathematical understanding and problem-solving. Writing results in Year 3 were positive, showing that students are building their ability to communicate ideas effectively in written form.
In Year 5, the results continued to reflect growth and achievement, with Grammar and Punctuation emerging as a clear strength. Students also performed well in Reading, demonstrating comprehension skills and the ability to engage with a variety of texts. Spelling results remained strong, further supporting the development of literacy skills. Numeracy scores in Year 5 indicated steady progress, pointing to the successful consolidation of mathematical concepts as students advance through the curriculum.
These results highlight the school’s strengths in literacy—particularly in Spelling and Grammar—across both year levels, and reflect the effectiveness of the school’s teaching programs and the dedication of staff and students. Overall, our data shows a positive trajectory of learning, with clear evidence of skill development and academic achievement.
In 1/2 Wombats we have been learning the structure of procedural texts and recognising all the different procedures we might read from recipes, lego building instructions and many more. To support our learning we followed a procedural text (recipe) and made delicious bread rolls. This activity showed us the importance of clear and detailed instructions when writing a procedure.

Our school is undertaking a wellbeing focus on anxiety through the implementation of 'The Anxiety Project' (TAP), a two year journey. Anxiety affects many families and we feel that it is part of our role as the education provider for our students to help equip teachers, students and families to understand anxiety and the role adults can play in reducing its impact on young people.
Students from Prep-Grade 6 have now commenced their TAP lessons. We encourage all parents to engage their children in conversations about their learning in this area and to consider attending one of our TAP Parent Information offerings detailed below.
We look forward to working together during this journey!
For those parents who would like to know more about anxiety, and supports for their families, who are unable to attend the TAP Child Development Course you are invited to register for...
